I don’t notice them till I’m right on top of them. Their grey-brown coat is wet from the heavy snow and they no doubt knew of my presence well before I notice theirs.
I can’t help but wonder what they must be thinking. The scene must be as surreal for them as it is for me. I’m staring intently at them for what feels like way to long. They don’t move. They hold so still but they are ready.
Deer are intelligent creatures. They are survivalist. I anthropomorphize their motivations and characteristics but I know they are looking for an escape. I guess in a way that is why I am here on this trail as well.
As I turn to head back to the trail, the deer slowly walk in the other direction. They are still keenly aware of me but if they are scared they do not show it.
